Foundations Bible Study 01
One of the things I have observed during my years of ministry is the majority of professing Christian’s have a shallow understanding of the importance of Scripture to and in their lives, and the main reason seems to be a lack of understanding as how to apply what they have read to their lives. For that reason, I am going to attempt to share with you some of the things I have learned over the years which have been keys God has used to develop my understanding and application of His Word to life’s situations. Jesus tells us in the Word, speaking to Peter as well as the other disciples, Matthew 16:19 [16:19 (KJV)] And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. He also said, concerning his disciples, (John 17:14 [17:14 (KJV)] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. With these truths firmly planted in my heart, I have come to the understanding that the Keys to the Kingdom is simply HIS WORD.
Therefore, I will start with some Scriptural basics, such as these verses of Scripture:
Proverbs 4:23 [4:23 (NKJV)] Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
Proverbs 23:12 [23:12 (NKJV)] Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge.
Proverbs 18:21 [18:21 (NKJV)] Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
Matthew 12:34 [12:34 (NKJV)] Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
These verses lay a good foundation for building our Christian life on. Basically, they tell us the thoughts we meditate on evolve out of the depths of our heart. They also show us the importance of preparing our lives to receive the Word of God into good soil so it will grow and be productive. We are told that all of the issues of life spring from what we have allowed to take up residence in our heart. THAT is why the daily intake of God’s Word into our lives is so important.
Philippians 2:16 [2:16 (NKJV)] holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.
1 John 1:1 [1:1 (NKJV)] That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—
So, what am I saying by quoting these Scriptures? It is important that we understand the Word of God is LIFE. The more of the Word we get into our heart, the more we realize the importance of that Word to every aspect of LIFE and the more we begin to trust God to apply HIS WORD to our lives. We must note at this point that Jesus is the Word and He tells us in John 10:10 [10:10 (KJV)] The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
The Word of GOD should become so embedded in our hearts that when we speak, we speak the truth of that Word into every situation we face and are able to speak that Word into the lives of those God brings across our sphere of influence.
Is this an easy process for us? NO! It takes time and effort on our part to study the Word of God on a regular basis so it begins to take root and produce the fruit of the Word in and through our lives. IT will be a lifelong process! However, we can rest in the confidence that the more we commit ourselves to the study of God’s Word, the more HE will begin to reveal and show us the truth and power of that Word in and through our lives. This is not an easy process for the enemy will try to keep us from experiencing these truths by every means he can throw our way, and he will try to cause us to doubt God and His Word but we do not need to fear his tactics. We must learn to trust God and His Word to persevere and claim the victory that has been given us through our relationship with Christ, (2 Timothy 1:7 [1:7 (NKJV)]) For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Paul encouraged Timothy: 2 Timothy 2:15 [2:15 (KJV)] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. We need to understand it is important for us to do the same.
